Coffee with a floral enzymatic fragrance, with a chocolate base, notes of milk chocolate, caramel, and flowers; it is a sweet coffee with a silky body and medium acidity.
The Producers
Although Ywangan is especially known for the quality of its coffee, it is no different from other coffee-producing regions around the world. Market prices, climate issues, and low social income are some of the challenges they face.
Of the 125 villages in the municipality of Ywangan, about 90 are dedicated to coffee planting, with 7,300 acres of coffee plantations. Ywangan began growing coffee in the early 1980s as a substitute crop for opium poppies. Farmers typically have between four and three acres, where they intercrop some varieties of Arabica coffee with crops such as avocado, jackfruit, jengkol beans, papaya, pineapple, passion fruit, banana, tea leaves, and macadamia nuts. Today, farmers have access to fairer market prices, both inside and outside the country, for their cherries and green beans. Some collective initiatives have flourished not only in Ywangan, but also in other regions of Shan State, resulting in new players in the coffee market, with the emergence of new processors being of great importance.
The Farm
The municipality of Ywangan, with an altitude of between 1,098 and 1,534 meters above sea level, is located in Shan State, in central-eastern Myanmar. It is also part of the Danu Self-Administered Zone. The Danu Self-Administered Zone is, as stipulated in the 2008 Constitution of Myanmar, a self-administered zone consisting of two townships in Shan State:
– Pindaya Township
– Ywangan Township
